Wasabi Irish Chain Quilt - Work in Progress

Wasabi Irish Chain Quilt | Work in Progress | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

Last week I made a commitment to use some of the many 2" squares that I have been cutting for most of the year. Rather than adding fabric scraps to my already overflowing scrap bins I have instead cut the scraps left over from projects into 2" squares. Similarly, I have salvaged some of the fabrics that have been in my scrap bin for a long time and cut those into squares.

All fabrics were cut by hand (rotary cutter) although I am all in favor of using a fabric cutting machine, and would have done so if I had been cutting multiple squares of the same fabric. Many of the fabrics were carefully fussy cut, which also doesn't work well with a fabric cutting machine. You may recognize some of these fabrics from previous projects ...

Irish Chain Quilts are a traditional quilt design with many variations in layout and one of my go-to designs for a scrap happy quilt. This design is also a perfect match for my collection of 2" squares. I planned out the design in EQ8 (quilt design software) and worked in small blocks which I felt gave me control over the accurate piecing and pressing of these small squares, as well as nesting all seams to ensure that the quilt top would come together without any problems.

For the background fabric I have used one of my favorite colors from the Kona Cotton range by Robert Kaufman. This gorgeous color is Wasabi! It is such a great color and when I checked my stash of solid fabric to ensure that I had enough of it on hand to complete the project I discovered that I not only had a fat quarter and a half yard on hand, but also yardage. I must really love this color!

This quilt project has brought me so much joy - endless hours of sewing and as a bonus I was able to use up many fabric scraps. Surprisingly, there are still many more 2" squares left in my box. Enough for at least one more quilt!

Sunday Stash # 411 Sienna by Alexia Abegg

Sienna by Alexia Abegg for Cotton + Steel | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
Sienna by Alexia Abegg
for Cotton + Steel

In this latest collection for Cotton + Steel, Alexia Abegg returns to her favorite source of inspiration, the desert. Continuing her exploration of hand printing, Sienna captures the serene feeling of this arid landscape and its flora and fauna. The quality of Alexia's hand carved stamps and block printed designs on unbleached cotton gives the whole collection a beautiful texture and depth.

The collection consists of 16 quilting cottons - shown here - 3 rayons, 2 cotton rayon lawn fabrics, and 2 cotton lawns (not shown here). Lots of substrates to please quilters and garment makers alike.

I really like the warm tone of the unbleached cotton; it gives the whole collection a rustic feel in keeping with the handmade vibe of the whole collection. The medium scale irregular dots (up to 3/4" in diameter) are my favorite print from this collection - especially the dark blue colorway.

I love my collection of "low volume" fabrics and have thoroughly enjoyed working with these pretty fabrics for the last few weeks! This quilt includes many fabric favorites and as often is the case I have added fabrics with a pop of color for interest. When it comes to color I find it difficult to restrain myself. Every scraps counts and I am therefore also pleased to have used up the many left over fabric strips from my previous quilt project (Herringbone Quilt).

The quilt is randomly scattered with printed novelty fabrics; anything from  from flowers to fruits, fish, insects, birds, cats, faces, mermaids, ballerinas, text, and more. These fabric pieces were fussy cut to feature those designs and add interest as well as a fun "I-Spy" element.

I have quilted the quilt by first ditch stitching all horizontal and vertical seam lines around all of the blocks, then adding additional lines to create a grid of closely spaced lines by the following seam lines around the center square of each block.

For the back of the quilt I have my usual backing fabric: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston and the binding fabric is a soft pink and white stripe from the Petite Basics collection by Sevenberry for Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

This week I am going to be using some of the 2 inch squares that I have been cutting from fabrics scraps for most of this year. Rather than adding small pieces of fabric to my scrap bins - where they may well disappear in amongst the many odd size pieces of fabric - I have cut my fabric scraps into 2" squares. There are many squares (!) and I am confident that I can pull a quilt out of that box. I am so looking forward to this project.
